About Uplift Debate

Students teaching students.

We are a collective of high school students passionate about debate and want to spread the activity to students in the Bay Area who don't have access.

These four leader of Uplift Debate oversee the program's curriculum, partnerships, and volunteer ecosystem, as well as volunteer themselves.

Jayen Shah

Three years of debate experience on Nueva's Varsity Public Forum Debate team.

Long-time Boys and Girls Club Peninsula (BGCP) volunteer and main parternship coordinator.

Arranged Uplift Debate's pilot debate program with BGCP.

History with teaching to middle schoolers.

Co-Founder & Volunteer

Benji Wojin

Three years of debate experience on Nueva's Varsity Public Forum Debate team, including being a current Co-Captain.

Has appeared on the national circuit, including Silver TOC in 2026.

Managed Uplift Debate's backend development, including building this website!

Contributed to lesson-planning and mentoring students at Uplift Debate's programs.

Sam Cedar

Marc Sidel

Advisor

Marc Sidel

Has over 20 years of experience in nonprofit administration.

Served in various senior leadership roles focused on program development, fundraising, and volunteer management.

Manages philanthropy activities at a private family office.

Mission

Our mission is to develop critical thinking and argumentation skills for middle school students through exposure to debate.

Vision

Our vision is for young people in the Bay Area to be confident, engaged, and self-advocating members of their communities.

Community

Students are reached across multiple Peninsula communities through Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula.

Inclusivity

Priority goes to students without existing access to debate, including students on financial aid.

Collaboration

BGCP provides the venue and access to students; Uplift Debate provides the curriculum and instruction.
